The Department of Nursing Science is part of the University of Pretoria;  and where the first degree programme in Nursing in South Africa was instituted in 1956.

Today the Department plays a leading role in nursing education in South Africa and they offer degree programmes. Geriatric nursing care | Herfsakker Old Age Home | Nelspruit

The Herfsakker Old Age Home is a member of the South African Women’s Federation. It is also registered with the Mpumalanga Department of Health and Social Services as a frail care center which provides sub-acute nursing care services to frail older and disabled persons.

The frail care centre is headed by a chief professional nurse, professional nurses and a team of auxiliary nurses assisted by health care workers. All the professional nurses have many years of experience in geriatric nursing care.

All patients are treated according to acceptable nursing plans, guidelines, policies, standards and practice and medicines are only administered and monitored by a qualified professional nurse.
Herfsakker also has a service level agreement with Netcare 911 for the emergency transport of their patients  to hospital.

South African Nursing Council | Pretoria

Approving Nursing Education Institutions and their training programmes as well as registering and enrolling nurses, midwives and nursing auxiliaries are just some of the functions of the South African Nursing Council. They have this authority and are empowered under two separate pieces of legislation -

The Nursing Act 1978 which makes it illegal to provide nursing education if it is not approved by the Nursing Council.
The South African Qualifications Authority Act, 1985

Their objectives:

  • promote health standards of South Africans
  • exercise authority in matters affecting training of registered nurses, midwives etc
  • promote liaison of education and training and to promote the standards of the education
  • control authority in respect of manner of practices pursued by registered nurses and midwives
  • keep Minister of Health informed of matters falling within scope of Nursing Act 2005
  • also communicate matters to the Minister of Health of matters of importance to acquired by Nursing Act
  • advise the Minister of Health on the amendment of the Nursing Act in order to support the universal norms of the nursing profession.
