The Southern African Network of Nurses and Midwives (SANNAM) was formed in 2000 after the nurses and midwives of the region realised the importance of expanding their role in the fight against HIV/AIDS. The aim of SANNAM is to improve national health services and social policies related to HIV/AIDS and other critical health challenges.
They realise the importance of pooling resources and working as a region in order to strengthen the contribution of nurses and midwives.
HIV/AIDS is a serious health problem, and the nurses and midwives of the region, who are the major role players in both health institutions and communities, want to reaffirm the vision by striving to raise the quality of care for HIV/AIDS patients and their relatives.
They also want to equip Nurses and midwives and to protect them from the transmission of disease and other related hazards within their professional Environment, and to conduct training workshops and in- service training targeting nurses and midwives.
The main strategy is to build the capacity of the National Nurses’ Associations (NNAs) in order to enable them to provide support to the nurses and midwives to maximize their role in the fight against HIV/Aids.

In 1937 they became on of two universities in South Africa to have Nurses on Campus. Their Division of Nursing and Midwifery has been preparing nurses at under-graduate level to meet the challenges of health care in South Africa since 1972.
Nurses and Midwives comprise the largest group of health care providers in South Africa.
The Division of Nursing and Midwifery is committed to facilitating the development of competent, caring and autonomous professional nurses and midwives. Students must be registered with the South African Nursing Council as a Nurse. To do the Advanced Midwifery programme students must be registered with the SANC as a midwife as well.

The fact that this nurse training school keeps excelling with a 100 % pass rate means that as a training school, they offer the best there is.
Tygerberg Hospital is a tertiary hospital which was officially opened in 1976. They are the largest hospital in the Western Cape and the second largest hospital in South Africa. It acts as a teaching hospital in conjunction with the University of Stellenbosch’s Health Science Faculty.
The school has set a record of excellence in theoretical as well as practical training which comes from the outstanding dedication and keen interest that the lecturing personnel take in each individual learner.
