They are members of the Veterinary Nurses Association of South Africa and their aim is to pomote and support the Veterinary Nursing Profession at all times and to endeavour to nurse their patients with skill and compassion and promote their well-being.
Veterinary nurses are trained to do everything except clinical consultations and surgery.
All the duties of a veterinary nurse are carried out under the supervision and instruction of a veterinary surgeon, in accordance with their Para-Veterinary Profession’s Act and an Ethical Code.They work in various fields -
- zoos
- game reserves
- private veterinary practices
- industry – the sale and product management of veterinary pharmaceuticals, specialized nutritional products and equipment
- research institutions – duties involve the monitoring of ethical principles as well as the practical handling of animals used in research projects
The Diploma of Veterinary Nursing is a two year, full time course offered by the University of Pretoria. Practicals are done at the Onderstepoort Veterinary Academic Hospital. The diploma is recognized by The South African Veterinary Council as adequate to qualify students as veterinary nurses.

Tygerberg Hospital is a tertiary hospital which was officially opened in 1976. They are the largest hospital in the Western Cape and the second largest hospital in South Africa. It acts as a teaching hospital in conjunction with the University of Stellenbosch’s Health Science Faculty.

The Western Cape Rehabilitation Centre is committed to the efficient and effective rehabilitation of persons with physical disabilities by providing innovative, high-intensity, outcome-based rehabilitation programmes within a safe and supportive environment. They also provide training for the skilled nursing staff required for this type of nursing.

The University of the Western Cape is a national university, committed to excellence in teaching, learning and research. The School of Nursing at the University of the Western Cape forms part of the Community and Health Science faculty.
They offer education and training in both under and post graduate levels. All their programs are recognized by the South African Nursing Council for registration, and are also registered with the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) and accredited by CHE.
It is the largest residential nursing school in the country and offers the B.Cur as its core undergraduate program and four masters qualification and PhD.
