Cocaine | South Coast Recovery Centre | Ramsgate, Kwazulu Natal

Cocaine: The Sinister White Powder

Cocaine is the famous white powder that has given rise to powerful and wealthy drug lords. South America sees ongoing wars between governments and these drug lords over the lucrative manufacture and trade of this narcotic. Apart from knowing what it looks like, or maybe even using it, most people are ignorant about the facts of cocaine.
Cocaine’s scientific name is benzoylmethylecgonine. The drug is sourced from the leaves of the coca plant and thus, together with its alkaline properties, the name “cocaine” is derived. Cocaine is popular all over the world and is used in numerous social, cultural, and personal situations. The majority of the countries where it is used also strictly outlaw its possession, manufacture and distribution, but this does little to stop its worldwide abuse.
The manufacture of cocaine results in it being produced in a mostly powder, or compressed powder form. The other forms of cocaine that are used include the less pure form known as “crack cocaine” and also tea-type infusions where the leaves of the coca leaves are brewed in hot water. There are a variety of ways it is used too. The methods range from rubbing the powder on the gums, smoking the powder, and chewing the leaves, to injection and the most famous “snorting” of the powder.
The effect of cocaine on the nervous system is to stimulate the pleasure centres and the reward pathways of the brain. This makes cocaine highly addictive and rarely allows for casual users, seeing most progress into heavy and habitual use. Cocaine increases alertness and creates the euphoric feeling of all being well. It increases energy and the feeling of being competent and sexual, with some people even reporting a benefit in their athletic performance. The problems come in when the drug results in feelings of anxiety, paranoia and restlessness. With heavy or excessive use tremors, convulsions and increased body temperature experienced.
The long term side-effects of cocaine use are devastating on the body and mind of the addict. Dependency may result in physiological damage, lethargy, psychosis, or depression. Fatal overdose though is the end of many addicts’ lives, despite the potentially terminal damage its use does to the body.
Help is available though. Cocaine addicts or their loved ones are recommended to contact the South Coast Recovery Centre. They care and are ready to help.

Cat | South Coast Recovery Centre | Ramsgate, Kwazulu Natal

cat
CAT: Don’t Let The Name Fool You

The popular recreational drug “Cat”, otherwise known as Kat or Khat, may have a less sinister sounding name, and may even lead the naïve to believe it to be harmless, but don’t let that fool you. If Shakespeare was right that a rose by any other name would smell just as sweet, then it is also true that a drug by any other name would be just as dangerous. Cat is a recreational, illegal drug that is found mostly in the night club scene. It is a very popular “party drug” and is used for its euphoric properties.
Cat comes in two main forms. It is found naturally in the leaves of the shrub Catha Edulis and in this form is known scientifically as Cathinone. The other form of Cat is one that is created synthetically and contains Methcathinone, being found in powder form. The natural form of Cat use involves chewing the leaves until the “buzz” of euphoria is achieved. The synthetic powder, which can also be produced as capsules or tablets, is most often snorted. The Methcathinone form of Cat is far more powerful in its concentration and effects, so it is this powder that is sought out on the dance floors of South African clubs.
Cat belongs to the drug class named “amphetamines”. These drugs work by triggering the release of dopamine molecules. Dopamine is the neurotransmitter that regulates motor behaviour, but also creates a pleasurable feeling in the neurons in the brain. Cat produces feelings of euphoria, stimulation, heightened awareness, increased confidence, alertness and energy. The latest medical research, however, suggests that the user’s concentration and judgement can actually be negatively affected. These symptoms have been found to lead to increased aggression, as well as appetite suppression. One of the biggest problems with Cat is that the “comedown” from the high can take as long as 24 hours and often involves mood swings, irritability and depression.
The drug has many similarities with cocaine in the way it produces a dependency in the user. Often the user becomes so dependent that snorting another “line” immediately after the first one is irresistible and thus Cat is highly addictive. Heavy and regular users of the narcotic place themselves at serious risk of developing amphetamine psychosis. This psychosis has great resemblance to schizophrenia and includes symptoms of paranoia, panic attacks, delusions, auditory illusions general loss of sanity. Even casual users come to exhibit personality changes.
If you find yourself within the addictive grip of Cat, or are a loved one of an addict, then we suggest that you contact the South Coast Recovery Centre for their advice.
